Quatre Bras Turn 5

TURN 5:

French move. Bachelu’s Husson single unit in skirmish formation and attacks Vinke’s unit in the woods (LHS of picture). Here skirmisher versus skirmisher (the French taking Vinke’s line left flank support bonus away with this move). Units in skirmish formation don’t get support, they also don’t get closing fire, but do suffer -1 for the melee. So French fight on 4s (+1 charge -1 skirmisher), Vinke unit on 5s (-1 skirmisher).

4 units of Campi’s Brigade exploits the gap and smashes into Vinke. The melee of Vinke in line + 2 supports, Campi in Attack column +3 supports. Vinke’s both units have already taken their Freshly raised in previous turn. The Line with get a closing fire.

While Bachelu’s Brigade of Husson’s 3 units attacks Kempt just south of Quatre Bras. Note Bylandt Jagers who were holding the bridge, have withdrawn behind the 95th in the woods.

Image from French left flank J. Bonaparte’s 6 units break free from woods. Where Jamin’s 3 units in skirmish order in the woods, and his artillery and other unit just outside on the right-hand-side of picture.

Tissot has 4 units approaching Kempt at Quatre Bras, but has left 2 artillery and 1 infantry to pour fire into Gemioncourt and remove the Jagers (this so far has only Disordered the Jagers – now has one casualty this turn). Not being able to remove the Jager by this turn loses the French 2 VPs. If the Allies still hold it by turn 8 they get 1 VP.

The mighty Kellerman and the Cuirassiers arrive!!

View from Allies side after their move. The result of the French attacks on Vinke force them both back as they retire 1 move Disordered, the line is shaken. The melee with Husson +2 supports, versus Kempt +2 results in a draw. But since Kempt’s unit is shaken and must take a break test – which he passes at +7. This is still a final result of a draw. Both units on Hold. French attack column loses the +1 Morale in next melee.

Vinke under pressure but holding.

Alten arrives for the Allies – the final troops are on the table. Note Brunswick takes his own command decision against Wellington’s orders, and has deployed the small Avant Guard and Jagers with his lancers to support Van Merlin’s horse artillery (near middle left of picture).
