40K armies with Bolt Action rules

Quite a few of us have 40K Armies but find the 40k rules over just too 80's in style and don't intend to read the Tome that is the 40k rulebook.

Several people have voiced an interest in using Bolt Action rules and matching the generic troop types, vehicles and weapons to those armies in the 40k universe.

I think that for one person to try and convert all the armies would be too much of a task, So if you have an interest in trying a 40k army conversion put your name forward.

A suggestion would be to use the 40k army list/ codex as the starting point to put a balanced starting point

Here are starter examples of conversions -

Land Raider with lascannon - super heavy tank (+11) - 2 x super heavy AT guns (Lascannon -180 arc on each side) and pivot mounted HMG (Heavy Bolters)

Terminator - infantry - Armour +7, HMG (Storm bolters)

How does that sound?

I'd maybe call the storm bolters an LMG or MMG because they're still only small arms, you could call the assault cannon and heavy bolter HMG's though(seems to fit a bit more in my opinion)

What i am suggesting is that people do their own list conversion, As I said For one person to convert all the lists is far too much!

When we have all the lists that are going to be used converted we can then adjust for any anomalies.

Yeah, followed that......erm, but trying to avoid doing any actual work. wink

Only WH40K stuff i have are my sons Tau.

Dont want to step on the toes of any real 40K Tau players.

(and also, still hoping to get the Tau into AT-43, but will happily bin that idea if people would rather use 1940K. )

I'm up for doing the Eldar,

Can I suggest the first action is to sort the weapons into the new categories,

i.e Lascannon, missle launchers, Rifle, Assault rifle, BAR, SMG etc.

We will probably come across thing like infantry carrying Superheavy AT guns.

Land Raider with lascannon - super heavy tank (+11) - 2 x super heavy AT guns

If..... Super heavy armour (BA) = Armour 14 (WH40K) ......Best in game.

Then......... Super heavy gun (BA) = Tau Rail gun STR 10 (WH40K )....Best in game.

So........Heavy Gun (BA) = STR 9 WH40K Lascannon.

Example ; Lascannon firing on Landraider Armour 14.

Lascannon STR 9 + roll of 6 = 15.......... penetrating hit (WH40K)

Lascannon Str 9 + roll of 5 = 14............glancing hit

Heavy gun (BA) value +6 and roll of 6 = 12 ..........regular hit.

Heavy gun (BA) value +6 and roll of 5 = 11..........superficial damage.

In fact because both systems use a factor + 1d6.....it could be said

BA Super heavy armour 11+ = WH40K Armour 14

Heavy armour 10+ = WH40K Armour 13

Medium armour 9+ = WH40K Armour 12

Light armour 8+ = WH40K Armour 11

APC / armour car 7+ = WH40K Armour 10

I maybe would have said that the Shuriken Catapults would be SM's and add in the Avenger catapults that the Dire Avengers have as the AR's because if memory serves the Shuriken Catapults have a shorter range.

I like the way you've worked out the armour for them, its just 8 minus 40k save e.g. guardian = 3+ (8-40k save of 5)

I agree that we will need to adjust the lists when we are ready but for now please don't pick lists apart, firstly concentrate of doing the conversions. After we have draft of them all we can get together and sort any anomalies out fairly quickly.

I suggest taking notes of anything we see isn't quite right and bring it to the table later.

We don't want bogged down with long debates over minor issues.
