Tau Playtesting

Thanks to Craig and Philson today for the first Tau playtest game. biggrin

It highlighted a number of things wrong with the Tau lists i have created.

1 ) The Tau need Mechanics.....big time.

2 ) Pathfinders should have grenade launchers, not AT missiles.

3 ) Pathfinders should have Rail Rifles / Ion guns as AT guns. ???

4 ) The Tau Hammerhead Railgun does 4 points of damage, so its literally a hit or a miss ! wacko

Not wanting to say to much but what is the Tau's weakness gonna be?

Thinking of other factions/races, they all have something missing, nobody ticks every box.

Pathfinder

move 14cm
morale 6
armour 4
melee defence 1

Pulse Carbine / Accuracy 2 / ROF 1/1.....PenDam 7/1

Underslung Grenade Launcher / Accuracy 3 / ROF 1/0 .....AoE 3.....PenDam 4/1

Rail Rifle / Accuracy 7 / ROF 1/1...PenDam 14/1

Markerlight: The section leader can use this to guide an off table missile to target. Acc 3+ / RoF 1/0 / Pen Dam 13/2. (+25 AP)

Standard squad (6 pathfinders) 300 AP ....1 special weapon, 0 to 2 specialist, 1 officer (Shas' ui).

Specialists : Medic, Combat Engineer, ECM specialist, shield-drone controller.

Shield drone controller : add a shield drone to the unit, use it to absorb casualties.

No combat knives, so no melee attack.

Low combat defence, so easier to be hit in melee.

Low morale.

Small units ( 6 man units with no option of Max-size units. ) except Kroot.

No troops with "Detection" ability.

No Type 3 AFV (yet)

And every army has mechanics, or at least the ability to self-repair.
If the Tau could have fixed some of the AFV damage, then it would have been a much closer game today.

How to bring Tau mechanics into the game....

Tau Earth caste normally would fulfil this role....or maybe drones ?

A Tech-drone unit ?

3 Drones with the Mechanic skill, something like the ONi Med-Tech ?

Type 2 infantry (an elite choice), armour 5, no weapons, move 18cm, G-pack, no officer, support unit.

How many points....75 AP ?

Why not just give them "mechanic" specialists? Or is that not in keeping with your vision for the Tau? I am speaking as one who knows nothing of WH40K so apologise if I sound naive wacko

That would be easier, i agree.

But according to the fluff, they are split into 5 castes.

Fire = warrior ......note fire-warriors. tongue

Air = Fliers / pilots.

Earth = technicians and workers.

Water = Diplomats

Ethereals = Leaders.

So its really just a nod to the fluff.

You might also like to know that the Tau are Nocturnal vegetarians.

No real killer instinct, so crap in a brawl, but the fire warriors love to shoot stuff up. cool

As you say....might be easier just to give them mechanics ?????????????????
