I'm thinking of starting a 15mm Sci Fi campaign based on a suitably customised version of zellak's Gang Wars system. Just a bit of fun for the New Year. The rules can be made up/added to/changed as the thing progresses (or not). Anyone up for a go?

Sounds good....whats the story / background ?

Will the characters have individual skills / defects / combat styles like Gang Wars ?

Have you got a catchy name for the game ?

Humanity is at war (YAWN!) with an as yet unnamed reptilian race. Both sides are venturing into unknown space looking for resources/allies.

I was thinking of a squad based game with specialists such as medics, marksman, demolition experts in each squad. Wonder where that idea came from biggrin ?. No characters as such and I thought combat styles were a bit odd in a military setting. But I'm open to ideas.

'Beyond Known Space' was an idea but it sounds a bit 'up your arse' if you get me.

Aye, ...agreed.....the combat styles were to give the players less control of the characters, so that the game had a much more irregular feel.

At least that bit worked. wink

Will the players all be on the same side and each run squads (against an Umpire) ?

A bit like hero quest, Space Crusade, and Space Hulk? Except human squads V aliens.

Certainly nice to see the Traveller 15mm scifi out again.

Would like to take part - but seems like tonnes of stuff happening 2013.

Saga, WWII, Kings of war, BloodBowl etc etc.

That was pretty much the idea.

No problem. It's only a bit of fun and players can dip in and out if they're available on the day. smile

I think we can all agree that Sunday's game went down like a lead balloon<_< . I have ripped up the rules (such as they were) and have started again trying to make things a bit less involved.

I don't think you should beat yourself up about it. It was fine. The armour and wounds for the baddies maybe a little too high. Tracking wounds on all baddies - slows things down.

If you want a game where squads of marines taking on wicked beasties then it becomes like Starship Troopers - Howard has the board game. It was good but tough, and near impossible for the marines to win. There might be ideas from it you could borrow. I guess it depends what the basis of the game is. Or could it just be an outside Space Crusade with a few twists?

I've cut out all the different types of aliens and made them all the same. Also the Human soldiers have the same stats as each other i.e. no sgts etc but I'll keep the skills and specialists.

Hi Che ... Nice game of H.E.C. last Sunday, maybe a bit less action than what I was anticipating. Just some idea's/thoughts on the game in general ...

1] Works well with the 15mm scale using the basic Gang Wars rules.
2] Objectives ... Main (Can be more than one, but must be completed) ... Secondary (Optional ... but this is where players get the blasts/goodies, so worth while investigating!).
3] Rewards ... Completing the Main obj(s) gives some skill/ability bonus to squad. Secondary Obj's will vary to suit mission.
3] Squad ... Add some variety ...
................... Grunt (AC:1 Wounds:3 ... Basic "Rifle" [as per rules] or "Auto" [Short range, burst fire - extra dice?] weapon).
................... Heavy Weapon - Usually a big guy! (AC:0 Wounds:4)
................... Medic (AC:2 Wounds:2 ... Only able to fight in H2H or has a [short range] pistol)
................... Leader (AC:1 Wounds:4 ... can pick a Specialty & Skill at squad creation)
4] Specialty/Skill ... We should be able to pick & choose what S/S we give our guys depending on Rewards & Secondary Obj finds.
5] Bug Attacks! ... More chance of bug invasions with each round ... Round one would be a 6, round two would be a 5 or 6, round three would see a 4, 5 or 6, etc, for some quick bug action. Maybe have a cap on how many bugs are running about the game table depending on the mission?

When developing/playing these types of games, there's a chance to improve/develop squads to what each player wants, so having some variety allows everyone to do that ... Walts

No worries, Che!

It's easier for me to go away from a game table and think on things
to maybe help develop the game, but, as always, ur the boss ... so
these are only idea's/suggestions that can be completely ignored!

See u Sunday for some cool Shadowrun! ... Walts.
