Meta Wars

Infantry (armed with bolt action rifle 1 shot / range 24")
Inexperienced 7pts (Defence 3+ to kill...morale 8< on 2D6 )
Regular 10pts (Defence 4+ to kill...morale 9< on 2D6 )
Veteran 13pts (Defence 5+ to kill...morale 10< on 2D6 )

Add:
+5 Body Armour (+1 to Defence )

+3 SMG ( 2 shots / 12" range )
+5 Assault Rifle ( 2 shots / 24" range )
+10 Auto Rifle( 2 shots / 30" range )
+20 LMG ( 3 shots / 36" range )

+20 Flame Thrower
+50 Bazooka & Pistol
+20 Grenade Launcher (Counts as Light Mortar, minimum range 6”)

Officers
2nd Lt 25pts, 1st Lt 50pts, Captain 75pts, Major 100pts

Specialists
Medic +10pts for ability
Sniper 50pts (one man)

Forward Observer 100 AP per artillery strike.
Spotter for off table Medium mortar @ 60 AP
Spotter for off table Heavy mortar @ 120 AP

Tanks
Hulls: Light = 50pts, Medium = 140pts, Heavy = 220pts, Super Heavy = 400pts
Guns: Light = 30pts, Medium = 50pts, Heavy = 70pts, Super Heavy = 140pts
Machine Guns: Medium = 20pts, Heavy = 30pts
Auto Cannon: Light = 30pts, Heavy = 50pts
Missile Launcher: Points as per equivalent gun. Cannot move and fire. Ignores cover.

Other Vehicles
Jeep / Soft Vehicle : 20pts, armour 6+
APC / Armoured car : 40 pts, armour 7+

Transport 1 man for 3 AP each......

Recce ability AP ?
Helicopter AP ?
Open Topped -? AP

What's the chance of allowing a bit of flexibility in
the size of inf units ... say 5 to 8 (or more?)
models allowed ... rather than 5 for all units?

I have odd Tau squads of 6 <-> 8, so their
being benched and can't be used
in another squad,

You could use the odd guys as spotters, snipers, heavy weapons crew or medics....

Or group them together as an ad-hoc unit, survivors from previous battles , thrown together to form a veteran squad ?

Yeah, I suppose I could bosch them about. I'm not really struggling for models to fill those other roles.

I just like the idea of having different size groups for different tactics ... bigger inf groups for the frontline to soak up wounds, where u only lose one unit when they break and small group specialist/veterans behind?

Been playing skirmish games for so long now, I've got used to the variety of unit sizes I can field,

Remember the main reasons for using small units.

Its more Modern Warfare.

Restricting the number of dice to roll (due to the number of dice troops get with Modern weapons !)

Easier to gauge points values of new special rules that players will come up with....
